Help children develop and explore the skills needed to have positive and healthy friendships. These question cards will prompt conversations that will encourage young children and young people to look at the friendships they have now and how well they are working. They will also help children consider how to make new friends and how to solve problems within friendships.
The cards are essentially in four colour-coded categories:
- Thinking about friendships you have right now.
- How to make friends.
- How to be a good friend.
- How to manage friendship difficulties.
The cards can be used at home by families to help children explore ideas around friendships in a safe and supportive environment. They can be used randomly as conversation starters at dinner time or more specifically as issues arise. The cards enable difficult issues to be addressed and start conversations that may not naturally arise. They let children know you are comfortable and interested in talking about their friendships.
In schools and youth groups, these cards can be used in sessions or lessons on friendships and personal and social development to initiate discussions. These can be teacher-led or chosen by the children. They can also be used in conflict resolutions or skill development sessions one-on-one with children who need support in these areas.
Therapeutically these cards can be used to help focus children in or friendship issues and prompt discussions about any changes they need to make and skills they need to develop. Sometimes the questions will help clarify thoughts, sometimes they will help the children reflect on current situations and sometimes they will prompt them to explore new ways forward.
