January Andrews fell in love with romance stories back when her mum was first diagnosed with cancer. Picking up a dog-eyed book in the waiting room, she found herself lost in the magic of romance. Alongside seeing her parent’s romance she set about writing her own romance novels, with four successful publications. Then her dad died suddenly, leaving behind the sadness of his death but also a bucket load of secrets that January was only just finding out.

Still spinning from the new revelations in her life, her long-term boyfriend dumping her and the need for getting a fifth novel written. She heads to the beach house that her dad has left for her. How can she write about love and happily ever afters when she’s not sure that they really exist? Her neighbour next door makes a bad impression on her, however, she soon discovers that she knows him from college. Somewhat of a frienemy, they have digs at each other’s style of books and make a bet to write about each other’s genre to see who can get published first.

What follows is a journey through researching books, discovering the secrets from their past and learning how to move on with their lives. A rollercoaster of emotions that will have you laughing, crying and feeling all the lust.

Take a journey through the friendship of Poppy and Alex who met 12 summers ago and didn’t actually like each other at first. However, a year later they spend a car journey together as they return back to their hometown in Ohio which allows them to form a friendship and plans for their first vacation. Over the years during college and beyond they make sure to plan a summer vacation together.

The story starts with Poppy discovering that she has met all her professional goals as a travel writer and influencer, however, feels as though there is something missing from her life. Her friend Rachel asks her to think about the last time she was truly happy, which instantly brings a flashback of Alex to her mind. However, the best friends haven’t spoken in two years. An incident on their last vacation led to them giving each other space, which as time went on it wasn’t ever easier to reach out and reconnect. However, Poppy has decided that she’d love to have one more summer vacation with Alex – if he’ll speak to her.

Flitting between the stories from their previous summers together gives you an insight into their friendship, their loves and passions in life. With Alex due to attend his younger brother’s wedding they make a plan to spend a few days beforehand together before heading to the celebration. Whilst her travel job at R&R have said no to her low budget vacation idea Poppy goes ahead with it paying and booking everything herself which doesn’t quite go to plan.

After having been friends for so many years, are they able to find the friendship they once had and possibly take it to the next level? But their lives are different, is there a way to make it work? Laugh out loud moments and tissues at the ready for this one.

Book Lovers (2022) by Emily Henry

Two years ago Nora had her first interaction with book editor Charlie as she arrived later for a lunch meeting to discuss a book from one of her authors. Having just been dumped over the phone by yet another man who has fallen foul of a romance trope and she is the woman left behind. Slipping her professional mask back in place she hopes that the meeting will be OK, however, Charlie doesn’t like the book and passes on the opportunity stating that Dusty has clearly never visited Sunshine Falls, North Carolina.

Now they work in the same building and Nora can be smug that the book became a hit without his assistance. Meeting with her pregnant younger sister she suddenly notices how tired she looks so when she suggests a trip away just the two of them Nora can’t say no. Heading to Sunshine Falls as Libby loved the ‘Once In A Lifetime’ book. The town is not how it is described in the book but it doesn’t appear to bother Libby, although finding Charlie in town is somewhat of a surprise to Nora.

Literary enemies, they banter back and forth via email and text, with him taking over from Dusty’s usual editor who has gone on maternity leave early they are forced to work together from his family’s book store. Whilst Libby has a checklist of things she wants to complete together before they head back to New York. As she and Charlie grow closer they discover that they each have made sacrifices for the ones they love and would give up a chance at happiness for them.
