Where Have All the Boys Gone? (2013) by Jenny Colgan

Where have all the men gone? Faced with 25, 000 more women than men in London, and gleeful media reports that it’s statistically more likely for single women to be murdered than get married, Katie is reached an all-time low. But all is not lost …

Another hilarious high-concept romantic comedy from Jenny Colgan.

While Katie’s glad it’s not a man’s world any more, she’d be quite pleased if there were more men in it – or at least single ones, anyway.

More likely to get murdered than married, according to gleeful media reports, Katie resigns herself to the fact there’s no sex in the city and heads for the hills – or the Scottish highlands, to be precise.

Despite the fact she’s never been a girl for wellies – and Fairlish is in the middle of nowhere – the tiny town does have one major draw: men. Lots of them.

But while Katie relishes the chance to do battle with armies of admirers, she’s not reckoned on going head to head with her grumpy new boss, Harry, shadowy developers intent on destroying the beautiful countryside and Mrs McClockerty, the least suitable hotelier since Norman Bates.

At least there’s the local eye-candy to distract her, including gorgeous newshound Iain. But he is at loggerheads with Harry, and Harry despises her. Life in the country might not be one big roll in the hay but can Katie ever turn her back on the delights of Fairlish and return to city life?

As Lissa and Cormac warm to their new lives, emailing back and forth about anything and everything, finally things seem to be falling into place. But each of them feel there’s still a piece missing. What – or who – could it be?

Totally Booked UK Review: Lissa works in London as a Nurse Practitioner Liaison, helping to prevent hospital readmissions. She sees a wide range of patients on her caseload, and as she heads back to her car after a home visit, she witnesses a hit-and-run. Not only is the incident traumatic, but she knows the boy who has been hit (and subsequently dies). HR thinks it might be good for her to exchange with another NPL in a quieter area—a chance for her to work through her anxiety and stress following the incident.

Cormac works in Scotland, some five hundred miles away from London. A chance phone call regarding a transplant patient leads to an offer of an NPL exchange. Lissa and Cormac swap lives and caseloads, learning about each other’s lives. Can either of them adjust and learn to like a different way of life? As they swap messages, they start thinking more about the person on the other side of the message.

It was a good read, and it was interesting to see the story unfold from both of their points of view. However, I gave it only four stars because I felt the ending was somewhat rushed and could have been done with greater depth.

Christmas at the Island Hotel: Mure Series Book 4 by Jenny Colgan

On the tiny Scottish island of Mure, Christmas preparations are even more hectic than usual . . .

Flora MacKenzie is worried about her brother. Fintan hasn’t got over the death of his partner, Colton, and Flora thinks he needs a project.

The Rock – the rambling, disused hotel on the tip of the island – was Colton’s passion project before he died. With Flora’s help, Fintan is going to get the hotel up and running in time for Christmas, transforming it into a festive haven of crackling log fires and delicious food. But running a hotel, they are about to discover, is not that easy. Especially when their motley staff includes a temperamental French chef, a spoilt Norwegian kitchen boy who can’t peel a potato without mutilating his own hand and a painfully shy kitchen assistant who blushes when anyone speaks to her.

Can they pull it together in time for the big opening?

And can Flora help her family find happiness this Christmas?

Close Knit by Jenny Colgan

Everyone knows her life story.

But who will win her heart?

Gertie has always had her head in the clouds, wondering what her life might be like if she could only pluck up the courage to leave the remote Scottish island where she was born.

It’s the only place she knows, but you can’t do anything there without everyone knowing – the glue of this close-knit community is the Knitting Circle, a group of strong, capable and frankly nosy women who work hard, gossip, knit and support each other through thick and thin. At the centre of this sisterhood is Gertie’s mum, Jean, and her grandmother, Elspeth, and the three generations of women live together, surrounded by wool, in one small cottage.

When the chance comes to make changes – a new job working with old school friend Morag on the local airline, new friends and even a possible new romance – a world of possibilities opens up before Gertie. Is this the way to make her dreams come true?
