The first book in the popular Shopaholic series – Meet Rebecca Bloomwood.

She has a great flat, a fabulous wardrobe full of the season’s must-haves, and a job telling other people how to manage their money. She spends her leisure time … shopping.

Retail therapy is the answer to all her problems. She knows she should stop, but she can’t. She tries cutting back, she tries making more money. But neither seems to work. The letters from the bank are getting harder to ignore. Can Becky ever escape from this dream world, find true love, and regain the use of her credit card?

The second book in the beloved Shopaholic series – For Rebecca Bloomwood, life is peachy. She has a job on morning TV, her bank manager is actually being nice to her, and when it comes to spending money, her new motto is Buy Only What You Need – and she’s really (sort of) sticking to it. The icing on the brioche is that she’s been offered a chance to work in New York.

New York! The Museum of Modern Art! The Guggenheim! The Metropolitan Opera House! And Becky does mean to go to them all. Honestly. It’s just that it seems silly not to check out a few other famous places first. Like Saks. And Bloomingdales. And Barneys. And one of those fantastic sample sales where you can get new clothes like a Prada dress for $10. Or was it $100? Is Becky too dazzled to care?

For once in Becky Bloomwood’s life, things are going smoothly. She’s got the dream job as a personal shopper (spending other people’s money – and getting paid for it). She’s got a fabulous Manhattan apartment with her boyfriend Luke. They’ve even opened a joint bank account (although they can’t quite agree on whether a Miu Miu skirt counts as a household expense).

Then Luke proposes – and all of a sudden life gets hectic. Becky’s mum in rural Surrey wants one thing, and Luke’s mother in New York wants the complete opposite. Becky knows she has to sit down and decide – but to be honest, it’s a lot more fun testing cake, trying on dresses and registering wedding presents. But time’s ticking by, plans are being made on both sides of the Atlantic and soon she realises she’s in trouble…

Emma Corrigan is like every girl in the world. She has a few little secrets.

Secrets from her mother:
1. I lost my virginity in the spare bedroom to Danny Nussbaum while Mum and Dad were downstairs watching TV.

… From her boyfriend:
2. I’m a size twelve. Not a size eight, like Connor thinks.
3. I’ve always thought Connor looks a bit like Ken. As in Barbie and Ken.

… From her colleagues:
4. When Artemis really annoys me (which is pretty much every day), I feed her plant orange juice.
5. It was me who jammed the copier that time. In fact, all the times.

…Secrets she wouldn’t share with anyone in the world:
6. My G string is hurting me.
7. I faked my Maths GCSE grade on my CV.
8. I have no idea what NATO stands for. Or even what it is…

…until she spills them all to a handsome stranger on a plane. After all, she’ll never see him again.

But on Monday morning, Emma’s office is abuzz about the arrival of Jack Harper, the company’s elusive CEO. Suddenly Emma is face-to-face with the stranger from the plane, a man who knows every single humiliating detail about her.

Catching the first train she can, she finds herself in the countryside, outside a beautiful grand house. Mistaken for another woman, she falls into a new job as the family’s housekeeper.

Disaster ensues. In a blink, her life has shifted from writing briefs to washing them – and she has no idea how to work the washing machine. Let alone the oven. A former master of the takeaway menu, she’s now expected to whip up fine cuisine.

But gradually, she falls in love with her new life in a wholly unexpected way. Will her employers ever discover the truth? Will Samantha’s old life ever catch up with her? And if it does…will she want it back?

Review

Workaholic attorney Samantha Sweeting works in London and is hoping to become the youngest partner at the best law firm. However, after discovering a mistake she runs for the hills, well the Cotswolds, in shock at the error.

Stumbling into a housekeeping job that she is most certainly underprepared for. She struggles with everything. She might have a fantastic brain but she is lacking in domestic skills. The gardener Nathaniel takes pity on her and offers to help her learn the ropes.

It took me a good third of the way into the book before I started to get into the storyline. I felt it was a little far-fetched that she couldn’t complete any domestic chores (how the other half lived).
