Mhairi McFarlane was born in Scotland in 1976 and got the fringe hairstyle locked down early so she could concentrate on wider issues affecting society, like why Cadbury’s don’t make plain chocolate buttons. Surely the demand is there. She has written many rom-com books and is trying to write another and not be distracted by Netflix or Twitter, with varying success.

Don’t You Forget About Me (2019) by Mhairi McFarlane

Rating: 5 out of 5.

You always remember your first love. Don’t you…?

Imagine losing your terrible job and your boyfriend all in one night. That’s what happens to Georgina when she relays the comments from the chef at ‘That’s Amore’ to a customer (who happens to be a restaurant critic from the newspaper). The chef sacks her on the spot to make an example of her to the critic. Annoyed about losing her job and therefore having no money to pay her rent she opts to go to see her boyfriend. Who she catches in with his PA.

What her sister is laying into her on the phone about her life choices, her husband tells her that he has a mate who needs someone behind the bar for a wake. Needing the money she says yes and heads over to a pub that has just been renovated. Working the wake she falls in love with the beauty of the pub and how wl the new owners have restored it. Offered a full-time position she is thrilled until the other owner arrives.

Lucas is someone that Georgina knows from the sixth form, where they dated until the leaver’s party. After which they never saw each other again. Until now. He doesn’t seem to recognise her but is still not thrilled that his brother has offered her a job. Thankfully she manages to keep the position and starts to work onside Lucas, stirring up all the old feelings she had never quite forgotten about.

A story of reacquainting old love, misunderstandings and discovering the truth. A descriptive account of a sexual assault is included within the book – tissues at the ready.

If I Never Met You (2020) by Mhairi McFarlane

Rating: 4 out of 5.

If faking love is this easy… how do you know when it’s real?

Laurie is a lawyer in Manchester, she’s been with her boyfriend Dan (also a lawyer at the same law firm) since she was eighteen. However, eighteen years later there is still no sign of a ring but they are on the cusp of starting a family. Or so she thinks.

Returning after a night out her life as she knows it comes shattering down when Dan decides he’s leaving. Stating that he’s not been happy for a while and needs to ‘find himself’. In the weeks that follow a dramatic turn of events happen and she is left questioning everything.

After getting stuck in the lift with the office love rat, he comes up with a plan that might help them both. But can they pull it off? Will anyone believe the lies?

I had mixed feelings about this book, I worried that it was so cliché to be making a plan with the office love rat. However, you should never judge a book by its cover. Discovering that under the rumours there can be a different truth.

Overhearing a conversation between the two of them it is clear that Cal isn’t happy about the connection. Even more so when her ex Jon arrives frunk and punches Cal.

If this weren’t bad enough she is brought face to face with another ex at a wedding. having escaped his gaslighting and abusive ways she reaches out to his current fiance which has consequences for Harriet. A journey through parental loss, abusive relationships, speaking up and friendships. Takes a while to get into it as it rehashes things from the past but a good book nevertheless.
